Developing the 30x30 Progress Tracker.

The brief.

The brief.

SkyTruth, in partnership with Vizzuality and the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative, began developing the 30x30 Progress Tracker with a focus on marine conservation to support the ambitious goal of protecting 30% of the world’s land and ocean by 2030. This initial phase required integrating diverse data sources, including satellite imagery and global marine conservation databases, into a seamless, interactive platform. The challenge was to make this complex marine data accessible and actionable for a broad audience, enabling informed decision-making for policymakers and citizens alike. Looking ahead, the platform is set to expand its scope to include terrestrial conservation, providing comprehensive tools for tracking progress on both land and sea.

Our role.

Our team played a crucial role in the development and design of the 30x30 Progress Tracker, collaborating closely with the SkyTruth team to bring this ambitious project to life. We developed an interactive platform that integrates complex environmental data from various third-party sources, including satellite imagery, conservation databases, and scientific research. The platform features three key tools: the main progress tracker, which allows users to monitor progress toward the 30% protection target; the Conservation Builder, which helps assess potential new protected areas; and a knowledge hub, providing access to valuable resources.

To ensure the platform is user-friendly and adaptable, we implemented a content management system (CMS) using Strapi, allowing the client to easily manage and update content. Additionally, we integrated Localazy for automated machine translation, enabling a multilingual experience and broadening the platform’s accessibility. Our work involved processing near-real-time data and adapting methodologies to align with diverse data sources, ensuring a clear and reliable view of marine conservation efforts at multiple levels of detail.

Delivered with impact.

Empowering action to 30x30 and beyond

In a data-driven world, turning information into action is essential. The 30x30 Progress Tracker, along with its suite of tools, provides clear and straightforward visualizations, enabling users to make informed decisions or advocate for them effectively. By transforming complex data into actionable insights, the platform empowers users to drive meaningful progress toward the 30x30 conservation goal and beyond.
