Digital Twins.

Pioneering the future of climate science.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), as part of the European Destination Earth initiative, is advancing the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin. A digital twin is a detailed virtual replica of a physical system, process, or object that integrates real-world data and simulations. In climate science, it creates a dynamic, interactive model of the Earth, enabling users to explore scenarios, predict outcomes, and test solutions for adaptation and mitigation with unparalleled accuracy and interactivity.

Leading the change in climate impact modeling with interactive, easy-to-access visualizations.

Digital Twins.

Transforming our understanding of climate dynamics.

This groundbreaking platform uses next-generation climate models to provide high-resolution, interactive simulations that address real-world challenges. By focusing on use cases like renewable energy in the Iberian Peninsula, the project demonstrates how cutting-edge climate data can guide decisions on wind farm placement, urban heat adaptation, and more, helping society prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The platform built by Vizzuality for the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) translates complex climate model data into interactive, easy-to-understand visualizations. It enables users ranging from the general public to energy planners and policymakers to explore high-resolution climate projections and analyze potential future scenarios.

Developing the Digital Twin for the Climate Adaptation platform.

The brief.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is Spain's national supercomputing center, supporting scientific and industrial research with cutting-edge computational resources. BSC approached us to develop the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin platform to demonstrate how advanced climate data can enhance society’s resilience to climate change. The platform’s goal is to make complex climate models accessible and actionable for decision-makers, with the challenge being to communicate this sophisticated science to a wide audience through engaging, user-friendly visualizations.

Our role.

Vizzuality played a pivotal role in designing and developing the user interface and experience for the Climate Adaptation Digital Twin platform. Our team worked closely with the BSC to translate complex climate model data into engaging, interactive visualizations. This required a deep understanding of the data, as well as the needs of diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and the general public. We focused on creating an intuitive and informative platform that would allow users to explore climate scenarios, analyze risks, and make informed decisions about climate adaptation and mitigation.

Delivered with impact.

Making climate science intuitive.

The Climate Adaptation Digital Twin platform was a highly ambitious and challenging project that required translating complex, high-resolution climate data into an accessible and impactful user experience. One of the key challenges was making sophisticated simulations and predictions understandable for a wide audience, from policymakers to the general public. Vizzuality added extra value by focusing on user-centered design, creating intuitive visualizations that simplified complex data while ensuring it remained scientifically accurate.

Noteworthy features of the platform include its interactive capabilities, allowing users to explore various climate scenarios, and its ability to combine diverse datasets into cohesive, real-time models. This innovative approach not only highlighted the power of the digital twin technology but also made it a valuable tool for informed decision-making in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

  • An intuitive, data-driven platform for real-time climate scenario analysis and decision-making.
  • Transformed complex climate data into clear, interactive visual narratives for better understanding and engagement.
  • Supported the BSC with a tool that bridges research with practical, actionable insights for stakeholders in climate adaptation.
