The UNESCO Article 18 platform

Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) is a global commitment to keeping living traditions, knowledge, and cultural expressions alive across generations. The Convention supports communities around the world in preserving and sharing the practices that shape their identities and connect people through culture.

Intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, rituals, festive events, traditional craftsmanship, and knowledge about nature and the universe, all carried and renewed by the communities that practice them. The Convention recognises that these living traditions are not only part of our past, but an essential part of our shared future.

As part of this commitment, Article 18 of the Convention promotes the recognition and exchange of safeguarding practices, encouraging collaboration, learning, and the sharing of experiences between communities and people worldwide.

The Unesco Article 18 Platform has therefore been thought as a digital space where communities around the world can share, explore, and strengthen efforts to safeguard living cultural traditions, all inspired by the collaborative spirit and principles of the Convention’s Article 18.

A user-friendly interface to facilitate the discovery and sharing of intangible cultural heritage globally.

The UNESCO Article 18 platform

Enable communities to safeguard their heritage through a digital platform.

This project aimed to conceptualize a community-centered digital platform that enables communities to explore, share, and connect around the safeguarding practices of intangible cultural heritage.

Design explorations focused on providing a dynamic, accessible, and collaborative space to acknowledge and celebrate living traditions as well as unwritten customs.

Community-led:

The platform will allow communities to share their safeguarding practices directly. This empowers members to document and preserve their cultural heritage with full agency.

Peer-to-peer learning:

It will be a space for sharing safeguarding practices, challenges, and solutions, enabling communities to learn from each other and adapt approaches to their local contexts.

User-friendly:

The platform’s design and user-friendly interface will ensure that diverse content (ranging from traditional knowledge to performative arts) can be shared in a way that honours the cultural specificities of each community.

Developing the UNESCO Article 18 platform.

The brief.

UNESCO approached us with the challenge of creating a digital platform that not only would accommodate diverse community needs and perspectives but also align with UNESCO's strategic and ethical guidelines.

The task required balancing community autonomy with the need for ethical content moderation, while also ensuring the platform's scalability and accessibility across various languages and cultural contexts—a task that required deep empathy and a nuanced understanding of both community needs and UNESCO's diplomatic and regulatory frameworks.

Our role.

Vizzuality’s role encompassed a broad spectrum of activities, from conceptualization to design, focusing on creating a user-centered platform that aligns with UNESCO’s goals for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. We conducted interviews to understand the diverse needs of stakeholders, including community groups, UNESCO member states, and potential platform users. This research informed our strategic recommendations for the platform’s structure, user experience, and governance model, ensuring that it would be accessible, intuitive, and relevant to a global audience.

We also played a crucial part in the platform’s design, working closely with UNESCO to develop wireframes, visuals and technical specifications. Our goal was to ensure the platform would not only be a tool for sharing safeguarding practices but also a space that empowers communities to learn from one another. This involved balancing the need for flexibility and adaptability with the requirement for a structured and moderated environment, respectful of the sensitive nature of the content being shared. Our work included advising on how to integrate with existing UNESCO initiatives, such as the Food Atlas project, to ensure a cohesive and user-friendly experience that supports the broader mission of cultural preservation and community engagement.

Our approach emphasised empathy and collaboration, recognising the diverse perspectives and needs of the platform’s users. Throughout the project, our role was not just about technical development but also about strategic guidance and design thinking—aiming to deliver a platform that is both innovative and respectful of the cultural heritage it seeks to support.

Delivered with impact.

The right balance.

Vizzuality’s expertise in designing for diverse user needs and cultural contexts, along with our experience in working with global stakeholders, was crucial in supporting the UNESCO team to design a platform that could adapt and grow with the evolving needs of its users. This project was particularly challenging due to the sensitive nature of the content - often involving deeply personal and communal knowledge - and as it required a thoughtful approach to sharing and safeguarding.

We addressed this challenge by designing an inclusive and intuitive platform that allows community members to contribute directly, while also incorporating safeguards to protect the integrity and sensitivity of the shared content.

  • Community-Centered Design: We created a design that empowers communities to directly contribute to safeguarding their cultural heritage.
  • Thoughtful Research Process: Through research and iterative design, we developed a solid plan to develop a platform that meets the diverse needs of its users, facilitating effective communication and knowledge sharing across cultures and contexts.
  • Inclusive Digital Infrastructure: We advised on a modular platform that can grow with user needs, and adapt to UNESCO’s infrastructure.
