Developing the Living Planet Data Hub.

The brief.

WWF Canada solicited Vizzuality to develop a comprehensive platform that consolidates and presents conservation data for Canada in a user-friendly, interactive format. In collaboration with Maple Leaf Foods Inc and Walmart Canada, the project aimed to make data-driven insights accessible to stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making for land management, policy, and corporate sustainability initiatives. The platform addresses the challenge of data fragmentation and complexity, providing a unified view of ecological indicators and protection metrics across Canada.

Our role.

We started this process by running a light discovery to define the platform's potential users and their needs, based on conversations with the client. We helped WWF Canada prioritize all user requirements to ensure maximum value to users.

Inmediatly after, we led the technical development of the platform, focusing on data integration from various sources, including scientific publications, government databases, and ecological studies. We leveraged our expertise in data visualization and web development to create an intuitive and scalable solution.

In this specific case, it was important to reach audiences that might not have high tech nor data-analysis skills, so the interface was designed for everyone to be able to read the data and make decisions about protecting their lands.

Our team designed the platform with a user-centric approach, ensuring that data is presented in a clear, actionable way for various stakeholders. This included developing a map-based interface that balances detail and readability, and creating tools for custom analysis and reporting.

Throughout the development process, we worked closely with WWF Canada and other stakeholders to ensure the platform meets users’ needs and is aligned with conservation priorities. We also built in mechanisms for feedback and future updates to keep the platform relevant and effective.

Delivered with impact.

A versatile & relevant platform.

The Living Planet Data Hub stands as a shining example of how technology, science, and conservation organizations can work together to translate complex ecological data into actionable insights accessible to anyone. The platform is already being considered as a valuable resource for external groups, such as indigenous councils and other stakeholders, to understand what is possible in terms of environmental data access and usage. It is a versatile tool that supports conservation priorities for Canada and serves as a model that could inspire similar initiatives worldwide.

  • We successfully integrated diverse conservation data into a unified platform, enhancing its accessibility and usability for a wide range of users.
  • The platform prioritizes user experience, making complex data insights actionable and facilitating informed decision-making.
  • The modular design allows for easy updates and expansions, ensuring it remains relevant in supporting conservation efforts as data and needs evolve.
  • By providing a shared platform for data and insights, Vizzuality strengthened collaboration among stakeholders, including government, NGOs, and corporate entities, to achieve greater impact in conservation across Canada.
