Forestry Analytics for Carbon Tracking (FACT).

Solving the fragmentation of U.S. forest carbon data.

Landowners, businesses, and decision-makers face increasing pressure to report transparent carbon metrics, yet existing U.S. forest data remains fragmented, inconsistent, and costly to compile. To overcome this barrier, the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, the USDA Forest Service, and ten leading forest sector partners united in a public-private effort to create the Forestry Analytics for Carbon Tracking (FACT) platform – bringing standardized, science-backed forest carbon data into one centralized digital location.

Bringing Siloed Forest Data Into One Accessible Place.

Forestry Analytics for Carbon Tracking (FACT).

A public-private effort for nationwide impact.

The Forest Analytics for Carbon Tracking (FACT) platform is a powerful suite of free tools designed to enable users to easily access and understand the carbon footprint of forest-based resources - at every stage of the carbon journey.

The platform serves as a landmark public-private collaboration, bridging decades of USDA Forest Service research with private sector expertise to democratize forest carbon accounting in the United States. By standardizing methodologies across the entire forest product lifecycle, FACT establishes a trustworthy baseline that enables thousands of landowners, industry leaders, and researchers to make smart decisions with confidence.

Today, as the platform launches as a beta version, users are invited to explore its content, test its tools, identify missing information and provide feedback. Valuable input gathered during this stage will shape the platform ahead of its full Version 1 release, which is planned for summer 2027.

The Forest Tools:

‍Empower users to analyze forest carbon dynamics and calculate baseline stock changes across the conterminous United States. Users can generate first-order estimates, securely upload proprietary inventory files, or model regional carbon dynamics using official USDA Forest Service data.

‍

The Harvested Wood Product Tools:

Deliver comprehensive carbon accounting for wood products, manufactured timber, and forest supply chain materials. These tools calculate manufacturing emissions and evaluate the avoided carbon footprint of choosing wood over fossil-intensive alternatives.

The Resource Center:

Provides open access to essential technical methodologies, a glossary, and detailed FAQs. Soon users will be able to access tutorials and real-world case studies.

Developing the FACT platform.

The brief.

The client wanted to build a comprehensive, user-friendly platform to consolidate standardized, high-quality carbon methodologies and data for forests and harvested wood products across the value chain. Initiated as a public-private effort between the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities and the USDA Forest Service, the project needed to address the challenge of unifying these very disparate datasets into an intuitive suite of digital tools.

Our role.

The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities brought Vizzuality in to lead the transition from initial concept to a fully realized digital platform. During the user and technical discovery phase, we defined core business requirements, provided the architecture of a scalable platform, and designed detailed wireframes to align complex user needs with technical feasibility.

Building on this, we then led the full technical development and UX/UI design of the FACT Beta platform. We translated complex scientific methodologies into intuitive calculators – delivering a seamless experience that empowers both non-technical landowners and advanced forest carbon analysts to measure the carbon flow in their lands, processes, and products.

Delivered with impact.
