Visualizing the history of web technologies & browsers.
A project with the Google Chrome team and Hyperakt
THE PROJECT
Google Chrome Team wanted to celebrate the anniversary of their browser by creating a web visualization of the evolution of web technologies and browsers over the past 20 years.
The idea was to celebrate the efforts of the web community to develop the technologies that allow us to enjoy today’s amazing web applications.
We know this is not a common project topic for us, but considering that all our projects are done on the web and that we love the web, we were honored to work on it.
What we made:
- HTML5 development
- App Engine backend
-
THE CHALLENGE
The design included intricate vector shapes, rich interactions and subtle animations, and the visualization had to look exactly right. We had to use Web friendly technologies only available on modern browsers, smartphones and tablets. There are not many authoring or workflow tools for to design this type of application, so we had to start from scratch.
-
THE SOLUTION
Obviously HTML5 was the way to go, especially considering that we were celebrating the web and its technologies. We took advantage of SVG browser support to draw shapes over Canvas, and used the great Raphaël and JQuery libraries to add interaction.
-
THE RESULTS
A fluid and responsive front-end implementation that gives well-deserved shine to the great visual and interaction design created by mgmt design, GOOD and Hyperakt.
HIGHLIGHTS
-
We love the web
We are really happy to have worked with Google to honor the Web and its technologies. Modern browsers and web technologies are what allow us to develop our own products and projects and we are very thankful for it.
-
HTML5 or die!
Through this project, we have been able to test some of the most advanced HTML5 techniques. We will continue exploring the limits of the technology in forthcoming projects.
-
Tablet ready
Considerable efforts have been made to enhance the performance and make the experience fluid and responsive in tablet devices.
